The Story of the Second Episode
Ahmad and Muhammad bin Muhammad Al-Ghazali arrive at the madrasa to participate in a highly anticipated debate. Ahmad is overwhelmed with anxiety, feeling as though his heart might leap from his chest. Al-Ghazali calms his younger brother, advising him to speak from his heart and to seek the truth rather than merely trying to impress the scholars with correct answers. Empowered by this advice, Ahmad steps up to the podium and eloquently answers the head mudarris’s profound questions about the nature of eternity, the human perception of truth, and the value of humility in the face of knowledge.
Despite his brilliant performance, Ahmad leaves the hall feeling defeated and overshadowed, convinced that the scholars dismissed him. Seeing his brother’s deep distress, Al-Ghazali makes the difficult choice to abandon his own turn at the debate to follow and comfort Ahmad. When Al-Ghazali finally returns to the hall, he finds the doors shut; the debate has concluded, and he is told he has missed his chance. Though he is saddened, a wise elder consoles him, explaining that sacrificing his ambition to support his brother is a far greater demonstration of wisdom than any academic answer, reminding him that doors closed from the outside can sometimes open from within.
As the brothers navigate this setback, a devastating tragedy strikes their family when their severely ill father passes away, leaving them in profound grief. At the same time, their estranged relative, Salih, continues down a dark path by participating in a bandit ambush on a caravan, which is soon interrupted by Seljuk soldiers. Amidst the heavy sorrow of their father’s death, Al-Ghazali and Ahmad are suddenly intercepted by guards and escorted back to the madrasa. There, the head mudarris, Imam al-Haramayn Juwayni, reveals that he witnessed Al-Ghazali’s selfless devotion to his brother the previous night. Recognizing that true wisdom and readiness reside in the heart’s sacrifices rather than just in academic robes, Juwayni offers Al-Ghazali the coveted seat at the debate. Without hesitation, Al-Ghazali declares that he is ready.
After a bitter confrontation with his brother Ahmad—who blames Salih for burning their family home and tells him that the family considers him dead—Salih fully embraces his dark path with a group of bandits.
Under the cover of night, the bandit group sets their sights on a passing caravan. Seeing that the local patrols have decreased, they plot a raid, believing it to be a massive opportunity despite the tight timeframe. However, before they can successfully execute their ambush on the caravan, their plans are unexpectedly thwarted. A scout spots a troop of 20 to 30 Seljuk horsemen charging down on them from above. Realizing that their hideout and plans have been compromised, the bandits are forced to abandon the caravan raid. Panic sets in as they scramble to block the escape routes, draw their swords, and brace for a fierce confrontation with the Seljuk soldiers.
